7 Days of Typographic Adventure
South of the Border!

Mazatlan Mexico - Day 1

Travel begins at 4:00am Minneapolis, Minnesota, on a blustery January morning. After 3 hours of sleep, our team loads into the Font Diner Cadillac to head off to the airport.

With only a few personal effects, a pack of gum, armed with only 2 years of high school Spanish and a lust for the sun we boarded our airplane headed South of the boarder and were soon on our way to Mazatlan Mexico! Our mission to discover the roots of authentic Mexican typography, hunt down diners of Mexico and bring it back to you our diners.

Mazatlan Mexico - Day 3

Our guide Miguel loads up the Font Diner safari wagon and we proceed to the depths of inner Mazatlan. Here is an excerpt from our conversation . . .

Miguel - "Donde?"
FD -"Show us your country's finest typography!"
Miguel - "Que?"
FD -"Umm, Donde al muy bueno typographie de Mexico!"
Miguel - "Que?"
FD -"Taco Diner!?!"
Miguel - "Si!"

We soon arrive at our fist spot in Mexico! The Rocket Diner! The shape was odd, but the food was even odder . . . Anyone for the all you can eat cottage cheese and ramen noodles? After a hearty plate of local food, and several hours of hot sun, it became obvoius that it was time to siesta for the day . . .

Mazatlan Mexico - Day 4

Our guide Miguel points out that even the best cows need to be walked to obtain the finest dairy products. This national motto is taken very seriously. Perplexed, we proceed to the new Font Diner Mazatlan location to see how construction is going on our new facilities.

For over 6 months we impatiently wait for the newest location to open since we first started construction earlier in the Summer. Progress is slow, but we are hopeful that our new location will be up soon . . .

Mazatlan Mexico - Day 5

Todays mission, to discover diners of Mazatlan! Our guide Miguel drives us to many popular restaurants in town. It becomes quickly apparent the influence of the diner on Mexico. We are surprised to find good food, cheap prices, and kind hospitality not to mention whitty Mexican banter and the occasional Taco joke . . .

As the day continues, we find ourselves perplexed as we spot the local Chinese restaurant in Mexico. Anyone up for some Won Ton Soup y queso? Nah!
